Nehemiah Stewart, a Civil Designer in our Columbia, SC office, has been mentoring boys through Empowered U since 2017. Empowered U is a learning organization that strives to continuously support children, families, and communities by providing innovative and sustainable empowerment and therapeutic programming. The program offers after-school enrichment, engaging workshops, mentoring programs, and volunteer opportunities that teach at-risk youth life skills, career development, and leadership skills.

The organization’s goal is to help kids change their view on life by encouraging them to take responsibility for their decisions and motivating them to achieve greatness in the future. During each meeting, volunteers offer their advice and guidance on topics like setting goals, job interviewing skills, healthy choices, and the dangers that accompany risky behaviors.

“I joined this organization because of its vision and mission,” said Nehemiah. “My goal is to inspire the youth and help them understand the importance of self-ownership and responsibility. I motivate them to change their mindset while teaching them that sometimes you have to change your surroundings in order to be successful. I agree with Empowered U’s founding message that “mindset matters” and I believe that being part of a community that has the same visions and goals will help spread this message effectively.”

A donation from McCormick Taylor's Charity Committee enables Empowered U to offer services to participants at no cost and helps provide kids with transportation to and from mentoring sessions, workshops/seminars, and service learning projects. The funds will also provide meals for the kids enrolled in the after school program.
