McCormick Taylor employees have transitioned into the new normal of working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the changes, our staff finds ways to stay productive, healthy, and connected. Below is a day in the life of Kathy O'Donnell, a Marketing Coordinator in our Philadelphia office.
What does a standard day-to-day look like for you now that you are working from home?
I sleep in until around 7 AM now, when I get up to walk my dog, Cooper. Once we get back, I usually check the news to see if there’s been a cure yet for COVID-19 or any news about when Philadelphia's stay-at-home order will be lifted (so far, I have been disappointed). I usually log into my laptop around 7:45/7:50 to start checking emails, answering Fuze messages, and writing out a to-do list for my day.
At lunch time, I take my dog for another walk. Usually this one is longer – around a half hour. We like to go to different parks around my neighborhood to see what flowers are blooming. Then, I get back and eat while watching a quick episode of Community on Netflix.
Once work ends, my dog gets another half hour walk (LOL), and then I usually go on an hour long run if the weather cooperates. If it doesn’t, I’m watching EverybodyFights’ livestreams to get in some boxing/HIIT workouts.
How does your new routine compare to a typical workday in the office?
I work with our energy group's business development efforts on a day-to-day basis. It’s interesting to see how the needs of our clients have changed during these uncertain times and helping our folks adjust to be able to meet those needs. Right now is a great time to be working on building a stronger/more personal relationship with all of our client contacts. I know I am really missing interacting with people and appreciate anyone who reaches out to me to just see how I’m doing!
How has McCormick Taylor supported your transition to working from home?
I’m so thankful the IT group was able to set the company up with work-from-home quickly. From my perspective, the transition seemed almost seamless. Leadership has also been good about keeping us updated on policy changes because of the virus.
What has been your favorite part of working from home so far?
I love being able to sleep in so late! It’s also pretty quiet in my apartment compared to the office. I almost feel like I’m completing my work more efficiently without all of the distractions.
What’s something new that you have learned during this time?
My hairdresser is going to be upset with me - I’ve cut and dyed my own hair red since quarantine started. I’ve also gotten back into painting after a couple years off! Additionally, I was forced to learn how to wash my clothes in the bathtub because our washing machine broke the week before the Stay at Home Order went into effect and now only "life sustaining" maintenance is allowed in my apartment building.
What has been the most challenging aspect of working from home?
I have a hard time staring at my computer screen for so long. Usually, in the office, I’ll have in-person meetings where I don’t need to be plugged in, or coworkers drop by my desk to discuss our work in person. Now, I feel like I’m staring at my laptop for eight hours straight a day.
How are you staying connected to your coworkers?
Our Fuze communications software has been really great – I can chat/message, call, or video call any of my coworkers with the click of the button! Video calls are my favorite part of the day – it’s nice seeing other people’s faces!
What’s the first thing you want to do when you return to the office?
I’ll probably go right in and try out the Pop-a-Shot basketball machine in the Philly office’s game room. I also can’t wait to see all of my coworkers in person and maybe even go to happy hour!
