THE CHALLENGE

The Chester Valley Trail in Chester and Montgomery Counties, PA is a regional, multi-phase, shared-use path that follows much of the abandoned Chester Valley Railroad. The seeds of the project were planted in the early 1990s when officials from Chester County, Montgomery County, and PennDOT pictured the abandoned rail line as a major trail.

A partnership between local, state, and federal governments, area businesses, and local residents has led to the fruition of the trail. Through multiple phases, the project impacts East Caln, East and West Whiteland, and Tredyffrin Townships in addition to Downingtown Borough in Chester County, as well as Upper Merion Township, Bridgeport, and Norristown Boroughs in Montgomery County.

HOW WE HELPED

McCormick Taylor provided civil and traffic engineering services for Phase III of the Chester Valley Trail. Although it is shorter than the first two sections of the trail, the completion of Phase III provided a key connection to the previously constructed trail portions and improved access to shopping centers, corporate parks, and the community of Exton. Users are now able to continuously walk or cycle between King of Prussia and Exton while connecting to numerous local trails and parks.

RESULTS

A ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 25, 2014 marked the opening of Phase III, bringing the total trail length in Chester County to 13.5 miles.

Phases I and II completed the trail from Exton Park to the Montgomery County line. When completed, the Chester County segment of the trail will span more than 18 miles and provide a vital link to many of the bustling communities, parks, and business centers in the county.
