In 2010, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) introduced the State Transportation Innovation Council (STIC) concept to state transportation departments and industry partners nationwide to foster ownership and pride in establishing a process in which ideas, innovative techniques, and processes are evaluated and implemented quickly and proficiently. In 2011, PennDOT formed its own STIC with a focus on building partnerships with a cross-section of stakeholders, including state and federal agencies, local governments, research organizations, and industry partners to deploy transportation innovations at the local, regional, and statewide level. The STIC brings together a diverse team of transportation stakeholders to forge an environment of innovation, imagination and ingenuity to pursues specific innovations and their rapid implementation to deliver a modern, high-quality transportation system to the citizens of Pennsylvania.
HOW WE HELPED
Our communications and planning professionals work closely with agency staff to create messaging that resonates with diverse constituencies across the Commonwealth. We develop training programs designed to educate internal and external audiences to promote a broad understanding of new innovations. Members of our staff presented at conferences to support an extensive outreach campaign.
McCormick Taylor assisted PennDOT and FHWA on developing and coordinating the Every Day Counts Showcase and STIC Roundtable that was a recorded roundtable discussion with transportation processionals as well as an exhibit hall demonstration. For this high-profile event, we managed the development of various interviews and video pieces needed for FHWA to produce national STIC videos.
McCormick Taylor created essential graphic collateral materials that conveyed complex technical information into easily understood messaging. We prepared infographics, fact sheets, appropriately-scaled display models, and provided multimedia support and have produced and distributed the quarterly STIC electronic newsletter, as well as the program’s annual report. We also performed a holistic website assessment to improve website usability and enhance the user experience for the STIC’s targeted audiences.
Since its inception in 2011, the Pennsylvania STIC program has been recognized as a national leader in innovation. The STIC has trained more than 2,000 transportation stakeholders and professionals through hands-on demonstration and presentations at workshops and industry conferences and events. It has developed a robust outreach and educational program with the goals to provide training to all PennDOT districts, engage industry partners such as transportation engineers and contractors, host workshops in partnership with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, and increase awareness and engagement of local governments.
