A GLIMPSE INSIDE INTERN DAY AT McCORMICK TAYLOR

Most internships place the impetus upon the applicant to bring to the table a host of qualifications – proficiencies, experience, education, characteristics, soft and hard skills, etc. Seldom does a company go out of their way to do the opposite – focus on the experience. During this summer’s Intern Day, it became clear to me that McCormick Taylor was different. They have just as much planned for their interns as they expect in return.

Intern Day 2025 was held in the corporate office in Philadelphia and brought together interns from offices throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. The day provided an opportunity for interns to interact with leadership, get professional headshots taken, enjoy a Philly themed lunch, hear insights about projects, win raffle prizes, and hear the stories of past MT interns.

The phrase “symbiotic relationship”, in some iteration, was relayed to us by nearly every person who spoke at Intern Day. Interns are seen as an investment in the future at McCormick Taylor, a way to develop home-grown talent to eventually lead the next generation. Look no further than co-owner Pat Guise, who started out as an intern himself in 1989, as proof. McCormick Taylor’s high retention rate and “stickiness” factor described by Dave DeLisi (who also started as an intern) in a blog he authored are biproducts of a culture that prioritizes relationships above all else. It’s one of the reasons why McCormick Taylor, despite its large employee count, resembles a company of a much smaller size.

A bus tour around Philadelphia to see a few of the countless projects McCormick Taylor has helped facilitate was a fitting end to the day. We visited several McCormick Taylor designed projects in the city, including the Frankford-Trenton-York and Penrose Roundabouts, traffic signals, pedestrian accommodations, and a number of bike lanes.

Meeting and talking to all the interns throughout the day’s events underscored the idea that, despite the diversity of our backgrounds, perspectives, and departments within the company, we’re united by a commitment for the betterment of the communities in which  we live. I look forward to doing my part during the remainder of my internship, making sure the important work that gets done across the company each and every day gets the spotlight it deserves.
