ROUTE 6 (PATTERSON AVENUE) AT ROUTE 73 (PARHAM ROAD) INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS

HENRICO COUNTY, VA

McCormick Taylor provided professional engineering services for the development of preliminary and final design construction plans for corridor and intersection improvements along Route 6 (Patterson Avenue) at Route 73 (Parham Road) in Henrico County, VA.

THE CHALLENGE

McCormick Taylor was tasked with developing four conceptual alternatives, including two short-term alternatives and two long-term alternatives, to reduce impacts in a very congested corridor.  Having been previously studied by VDOT multiple times over the period of several years, this intersection presented numerous challenges and constraints.

HOW WE HELPED

Phase 1 included the evaluation and selection of conceptual at-grade design alternatives and supporting data for a Citizen Information Meeting for improvements to the intersection. Extensive Synchro traffic analyses were performed on existing conditions as well as for projections for future growth throughout the corridor. Along with providing detailed traffic analysis and conceptual drawings for each of the alternatives, we developed a comprehensive planning-level construction cost estimate and right-of-way acquisition estimate. McCormick Taylor compiled all data for this project into a technical memo for review and comment by VDOT and Henrico County. The conceptual designs and operational levels of service were presented to the public and ultimately, a preferred alternative was chosen to move forward into final design.

For Phase 2, McCormick Taylor prepared preliminary and final roadway, drainage and traffic engineering design plans related to operational and safety improvements to the intersection and all approaches. Improvements included the addition of auxiliary lanes; addition and lengthening of turn lanes; closure of median openings; new and modified signals; addition of raised medians, curb and gutter, and sidewalk; and signing and pavement markings. The design also included the need for several retaining walls, including one significant mechanically stabilized earth wall, to minimize the amount of right-of-way impacts. In addition, we coordinated with VDOT’s utility consultant relative to significant utility relocations. McCormick Taylor also provided engineering support during bidding and construction.

RESULTS

The completed project improves safety and capacity at this important junction by adding turn lanes, sidewalks and crosswalks at the intersection of Parham Road and Patterson Avenue.
