SOUTH RIVER GREENWAY TRAIL PHASE 2B

WAYNESBORO, VA

The South River Greenway Trail Phase 2B improvements were approximately 0.7 miles in length and started where Phase 2A, another McCormick Taylor project, was completed.

THE CHALLENGE

A unique aspect of this project involved the coordination with City staff and personnel representing DuPont, who was in the process of a major environmental remediation effort along the banks of the South River that encompassed and paralleled the project location. The trail also passed through a wooded area with steep embankments and an existing springhouse that was within close proximity of the trail.  In addition, part of the trail route was positioned to coincide with an existing City roadway that essentially served as a driveway to a nearby residence.

HOW WE HELPED

McCormick Taylor reviewed DuPont’s remediation plans for the embankment area along the boundary of North Park and adjusted the design of the trail to coordinate and accommodate an alignment to take advantage of DuPont’s earthwork activities, which then minimized the amount of grading the project’s contractor had to perform during construction. This partnering provided significant cost and time savings to the City by having the vast majority of the earthwork and base stone in place prior to the trail construction.

The project improvements included an asphalt shared-use path (varying between 8 and 12 feet in width), ADA-compliant bike/pedestrian accommodations, drainage pipe, trail signage, traffic engineering, environmental permitting, pavement marking, benches, and other appurtenances. Other work included right-of-way acquisition on several parcels, utility coordination, bid assistance, and construction administration.

RESULTS

The trail now connects the City’s North Park to downtown and has experienced significant use by the public, including during construction.
