FALLING BRANCH ROAD INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS

CHRISTIANSBURG, VA

This locally-administered, VDOT Revenue Sharing project consisted of providing preliminary and final design for improvements at the intersection of Falling Branch Road and Roanoke Street (US Route 11 Business).

DESIGN , COMMUNITY, INFRASTRUCTURE

THE CHALLENGE

The project involved major slope changes for the relocated entrance to accommodate future development of corner parcels for a 20-acre shopping mall and drainage challenges related to maximizing the usage of existing facilities. Access management was also a key component of the project’s overall success due to the adjacent location of several business developments and the fact that the project is in close proximity to the grade separated interchange of Roanoke Street and US Route 460, a limited access roadway.

HOW WE HELPED

Improvements included the coordination of relocating an entrance into an adjacent shopping mall development, addition of a traffic signal, turn lanes, raised medians, curb and gutter with associated storm sewer, sidewalk, ADA curb ramps, pedestrian crosswalks, and adjustments/relocations of other entrances. In addition, relocation of 350 linear feet of 6-inch to 12-inch water main and 600 linear feet of 6-inch to 8-inch sanitary sewer main was necessary at this major intersection in the Town. McCormick Taylor staff also had detailed coordination with the VDOT district office regarding traffic signal operations and synchronization with the adjacent US Route 460 signals.
