March is Women's History Month, and we asked for advice to young female engineers from one of our transportation leaders, Susan Guisinger-Colón, PE, LEED AP.
"Dream big. Set big goals and go after them. You may not accomplish them all, but if you don’t set them, you have nothing to reach for. Look for mentors that will help you achieve your goals and support you along the way."
Throughout Susan's 23 years of experience, she has always strived to accomplish her goals – leading to her current role designing and managing a wide variety of highway and bridge projects in Pennsylvania. Her role entails reviewing consultant plans, finding engineering solutions, and advising county and municipal clients on a variety of topics. Her primary focus is the administration and management of roads and bridges for local counties.
Susan and McCormick Taylor's Exton office have been working with the Montgomery County Parks, Trails, and Historic Sites Department and recently completed the inventory of their 460 structures. McCormick Taylor inspected the bulk of those structures and has put together a capital plan to identify the need for replacement and rehabilitation of structures based on our inspection findings. As a result of the plan, the County has initiated the design of two bridges for rehabilitation.
In her free time, Susan enjoys riding her Peloton and volunteering at the Brandywine SPCA as a member of the Behavior Team, where she works with dogs to prepare them for adoption. Susan is also actively involved in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day, an event where participants walk 60 miles in three days to raise funds for breast cancer research. She is a member of ASHE Delaware Valley and the National Society of Professional Engineers and plans to join WTS in the near future.
